Youth Sports

Joint Base Andrews’ Youth Sports offers programs for children ages 3-18 and is dedicated to providing first-rate, wholesome and safe sports programs.

The programs are recreational with an emphasis on skill development, teamwork, fair play and participation, and are based on the National Standards for Youth Sports.

The standards are designed to create a youth sports environment that is a fun and memorable experience for all. The core sports offered are basketball, fall soccer, baseball (tee ball, machine pitch, youth pitch), flag football and cheerleading for flag football and basketball.

Our programs will promote and enhance the overall physical, social and emotional well-being of its participants through a trained and educated staff in a fun, positive and healthy environment.

The sports program offers participants a fun way to learn the basics about each sport, and form lasting lifelong skills.

There are two leagues within the sports program: The base league and the Military Youth Athletic Conference (MYAC). Base league teams are set up in two-year age groups and are co-ed through age 13.

The MYAC League officially begins at age 14 and is no longer co-ed; these teams interleague with other military sports programs and travel to their locations as well.

Start Smart Program

In addition to our Youth Sports Program, the Start Smart Program is for youth 3-4 years of age. The Start Smart Programs, created by the National Alliance for Youth Sports, help kids get ready for sports… and succeed in life!

It’s an innovative step-by-step approach that builds confidence and self-esteem in a fun and safe sports environment. Start Smart was developed by top motor skill development specialists in the field of youth sports.

Parent-child groups perform motor skill tasks that gradually build confidence in children while they are having fun at the same time.

Each Start Smart Program utilizes the Start Smart Sports Readiness Test to help parents objectively measure their child’s abilities. As the program progresses and children show improvement, the skills and exercises are altered so that each child remains challenged.

Parents spend quality time with their children while learning how to properly teach and support them in sports.

Volunteer Program

The Youth Sports program has one of the largest volunteer programs on base. All of our support from coaches, team managers, commissioners, and sometimes officials are strictly volunteers and the support we get from our volunteers is a must and a great need for our program to succeed.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age to coach a team; for volunteers 12-18 years, there’s a 4-hour limit per day during school hours. All volunteers must complete an application, have a current, clean and clear background check to include fingerprinting and complete the required number of training hours prior to working with children.
